The best companies learned a long time ago that the people they select will largely determine their success.

They therefore take a long time to hire people and are very careful in both interviewing and in checking references.

Once a person has been hired, if that hiree is the wrong person, he or she can cause a great deal of harm before being let go.

2000 years Before Christ, in India and Mesopotamia

Travel for trade was an important feature since the beginning of civilisation. The port at Lothal was an important centre of trade between the Indus valley civilisation and the Sumerian civilisation.

600 BC and thereafter

The earliest form of leisure tourism can be traced as far back as the Babylonian and Egyptian empires. A museum of historic antiquities was open to the public in Babylon. The Egyptians held many religious festivals that attracted the devout and many people who thronged to cities to see famous works of arts and buildings.

In India, as elsewhere, kings travelled for empire building. The Brahmins and the common people travelled for religious purposes. Thousands of Brahmins and the common folk thronged Sarnath and Sravasti to be greeted by the inscrutable smile of the Enlightened One- the Buddha.

500 BC, the Greek civilisation

The Greek tourists travelled to sites of healing gods. The Greeks also enjoyed their religious festivals that increasingly became a pursuit of pleasure, and in particular, sport. Athens had become an important site for travellers visiting the major sights such as the Parthenon. Inns were established in large towns and seaports to provide for travellers' needs. Courtesans were the principal entertainment offered.

 
This era also saw the birth of travel writing. Herodotus was the worlds' first travel writer. Guidebooks also made their appearance in the fourth century covering destinations such as Athens, Sparta and Troy. Advertisements in the way of signs directing people to inns are also known in this period.

The Roman Empire

With no foreign borders between England and Syria, and with safe seas from piracy due to Roman patrols, the conditions favouring travel had arrived. First class roads coupled with staging inns (precursors of modern motels) promoted the growth of travel. Romans travelled to Sicily, Greece, Rhodes, Troy and Egypt. From 300 AD travel to the Holy Land also became very popular. The Romans introduced their guidebooks (itineraria), listing hotels with symbols to identify quality.

Second homes were built by the rich near Rome, occupied primarily during springtime social season. The most fashionable resorts were found around Bay of Naples. Naples attracted the retired and the intellectuals, Cumae attracted the fashionable while Baiae attracted the down market tourist, becoming noted for its rowdiness, drunkenness and all- night singing.

Travel and Tourism were to never attain a similar status until the modern times.

In the Middle Ages

Travel became difficult and dangerous as people travelled for business or for a sense of obligation and duty.

Adventurers sought fame and fortune through travel. The Europeans tried to discover a sea route to India for trade purposes and in this fashion discovered America and explored parts of Africa. Strolling players and minstrels made their living by performing as they travelled. Missionaries, saints, etc. travelled to spread the sacred word.

Leisure travel in India was introduced by the Mughals. The Mughal kings built luxurious palaces and enchanting gardens at places of natural and scenic beauty (for example Jehangir travelled to Kashmir drawn by its beauty.

Travel for empire building and pilgrimage was a regular feature.

The Grand Tour

From the early seventeenth century, a new form of tourism was developed as a direct outcome of the Renaissance. Under the reign of Elizabeth 1, young men seeking positions at court were encouraged to travel to continent to finish their education. Later, it became customary for education of gentleman to be completed by a 'Grand Tour' accompanied by a tutor and lasting for three or more years. While ostensibly educational, the pleasure seeking men travelled to enjoy life and culture of Paris, Venice or Florence. By the end of eighteenth century, the custom had become institutionalised in the gentry. Gradually pleasure travel displaced educational travel. The advent of Napoleonic wars inhibited travel for around 30 years and led to the decline of the custom of the Grand Tour.

The development of the spas

The spas grew in popularity in the seventeenth century in Britain and a little later in the European Continent as awareness about the therapeutic qualities of mineral water increased. Taking the cure in the spa rapidly acquired the nature of a status symbol. The resorts changed in character as pleasure became the motivation of visits. They became an important centre of social life for the high society.

In the nineteenth century they were gradually replaced by the seaside resort.

The sun, sand and sea resorts

The sea water became associated with health benefits. The earliest visitors therefore drank it and did not bathe in it. By the early eighteenth century, small fishing resorts sprung up in England for visitors who drank and immersed themselves in sea water. With the overcrowding of inland spas, the new sea side resorts grew in popularity. The introduction of steamboat services in 19th century introduced more resorts in the circuit. The seaside resort gradually became a social meeting point

 Role of the industrial revolution in promoting travel in the west

 The rapid urbanisation due to industrialisation led to mass immigration in cities. These people were lured into travel to escape their environment to places of natural beauty, often to the countryside they had come from change of routine from a physically and psychologically stressful jobs to a leisurely pace in countryside.

Highlights of travel in the nineteenth century 

·        Advent of railway initially catalysed business travel and later leisure travel. Gradually special trains were chartered to only take leisure travel to their destinations.

·        Package tours organised by entrepreneurs such as Thomas Cook.

·        The European countries indulged in a lot of business travel often to their colonies to buy raw material and sell finished goods.

·        The invention of photography acted as a status-enhancing tool and promoted overseas travel.

·        The formation of first hotel chains; pioneered by the railway companies who established great railway terminus hotels.

·        Seaside resorts began to develop different images as for day-trippers, elite, for gambling.

·        Other types of destinations-ski resorts, hill stations, mountaineering spots etc.

·        The technological development in steamships promoted travel between North America and Europe.

·        The Suez Canal opened direct sea routes to India and the Far East.

·        The cult of the guidebook followed the development of photography.

 

 

Tourism in the Twentieth Century

 

The First World War gave first hand experience of countries and aroused a sense of curiosity about international travel among less well off sector for the first time. The large scale of migration to the US meant a lot of travel across the Atlantic. Private motoring began to encourage domestic travel in Europe and the west.  The sea side resort became annual family holiday destination in Britain and increased in popularity in other countries of the west. Hotels proliferated in these destinations.

The birth of air travel and after

The wars increased interest in international travel. This interest was given the shape of mass tourism by the aviation industry. The surplus of aircrafts and growth of private airlines aided the expansion of air travel. The aircraft had become comfortable, faster and steadily cheaper for overseas travel. With the introduction of Boeing 707 jet in 1958, the age of air travel for the masses had arrived. The beginning of individual travel in a significant volume only occurred in the 80s. Air travel also led to a continuous growth in business travel especially with the emergence of the MNCs.

A canyon landform is a deep and narrow valley with high walls that typically extends for miles. Erosion that takes hundreds of thousand of years is the cause of this forming landform. Gradual geologic uplift may end up in massive rivers running in the canyons. These streams are referred to as entrenched rivers. Rivers that are in canyons have a tough time changing their direction. Two other kinds of canyon landforms are found around the planet are the plateau and slot types. The most common ways canyons are formed are through erosion. A river is flowing on the floor of these canyons which erodes and shapes them. Many of the Grand Canyon has walls that are high and steep.

Corporate culture simply means, "This is the way we do things around here", or

"A set of acceptable behaviours we expect people to do."

There are always two cultures in a company, family or group.

The first is the "espoused culture" - i.e. "people are our most important product."

In an "espoused culture," what we say doesn't fit with what we actually do or what people are rewarded for. So if we say "people are important" but we treat them badly what is said does not fit with what we do. The result is cynicism, resentment and dis-engagement - KaChing$$$ - cash down the toilet.

The second is the "real culture" in which behaviours reflect the stated values. Outcome: Alignment, engagement and loyalty. KaChing$$$ - money in the bank.

A "real culture" points the way to an ideal and 'better' culture that will lead to a sustainable business that has a great "Invisible Balance Sheet."

The "invisible Balance Sheet"

A term coined by Carl Sveiby, is made up of three families of "invisible" or intangible assets:

(1) Internal Structure - Consists of patents, concepts, models, and computer and administrative systems. These are created by the employees and are thus generally "owned" by the organization, and adhere to it.

(2) External Structure - the relationships with customers and suppliers, brand names, trademarks and reputation, or "image". Some of these can be considered legal property, but the bond is not as strong as in the case of internal assets because investments in them cannot be made with the same degree of confidence. The value of such assets is primarily influenced by how well the company solves its customers´ problems -or avoids creating problems for customers. There is always an element of uncertainty here. Reputations and relationships can be good or bad, and can change over time. Peanut butter or "mad cow" being cases in point.

(3) Individual Human Competence - or intellectual capital is people's ability and/or willingness to act in various situations that add value to the company. It includes skills, education, experience, values and social skills. Competence cannot be owned by anyone or anything but the person who possesses them, because in the final analysis, employees are voluntary members of the organization,

Why Build a Healthy Culture?

The results can be magnificent if top management enshrines and rewards the right behaviours i.e. Disney, Apple, Google. Disastrous if the company leaders are incongruent, inconsistent and duplicitous. i.e. Ford, GM & Chrysler

One successful example is Northwest Airlines, which has built its culture on the development and motivation of the individual in order to contribute to team success. Southwest has produced 97 consecutive quarters of profits while other airlines floundered in bankruptcy.

One purpose of articulating and fostering a healthy culture is to lead employees to adopt "the mind-set of owner-operators." The hired guns of global financial institutions failed miserably in this regard.

Culture Differs from One Organization to Another.

Cambridge Design Partnership, in the UK, employs only 25 people, mostly top-class engineers. Its culture is built on the goal of attracting and keeping customers for contract research. Keeping is the key element here, because in the engineering design business the sales cycle is so long - often years. CDP has never had a failed project and has many repeat customers.

The "real" and the "espoused" definitions of culture share an obvious link. If you change the culture from whatever exists, i.e. from unclear purpose and shoddy results, to clear purpose and consistently outstanding results, then you change the "way we do things round here."

Progressive, effective top managers understand and behave in ways that show that they are responsible for building and maintaining a healthy culture. If some aspect of the business is broken, they will introduce some new ways that will produce the desired results. They work with people to fine-tune the culture. Any wise, experienced business leader worth their salt will tell you that people cooperate best when executing policies and procedures devised with their collaboration.

The Present Exception to the Rule - Sort of.

Right now, in this economic malaise there is an apparent and major exception to the collaboration principle.

Businesses in trouble require a quick, marked cultural change to drive the turnaround - now. A faltering company can be made more effective if everyone puts their shoulders into the tasks.

Collaboration is essential, but prolonged consultation is not so useful in this instance. What top management must do is tune into, and turn up the volume on that radio station - WII-FM - (What's In It For Me?) so that every employee understands that now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of the company. When the house is on fire, you don't sit around debating about what to do next! You make sure people don't get burned because they're frozen in fear.

However, crisis management is not a strong foundation for constructing a lasting, healthy culture. When the crisis is successfully dealt with, the urgency and commitment that everyone brought to the turnaround quickly dissipates. The organization and culture can quickly revert to the status quo - which was the source of all the trouble in the first place.

CDP and Southwest Airlines have one thing in common. All their employees, from the CEO down, have a deep knowledge of the business, its objectives and its practices - to most of which they give their wholehearted support.

The leadership team can, because of a common cultural understanding and commitment, pursue ambitious, quick-paced plans that would not be possible in a dysfunctional, slow moving culture. Companies with healthy cultures are more likely to have the resiliency to weather the firestorm while preserving their culture.

Other companies, with less healthy cultures, and which successfully emerge from the economic crisis will have to, again, begin re-working their culture as the good times start to roll again - if for no other reason than the "war for good talent" will rear its ugly head once again. Top managements' efforts will have to move from financial survival to profitable sustainability while building the "invisible Balance Sheet."

A healthy culture always follows from the principles and policies that are put in place and modeled - not vice-versa.

1. What is important around here? What gets rewarded? What gets punished? What gets ignored. What are our core beliefs, the principles that govern how we interact and treat one another, our customers and our suppliers? - Values.

2. Do we have the right people on the bus and in the right seats? Are they aligned with the demands of the business? Do we have the competitive intelligence? How do we develop them into leaders and managers who will drive results while developing people? - The "Invisible Balance Sheet."

3. Where are we going? What future state do we want to achieve? - Vision.

4. How are we going to get there? What's the Big Dream? What is the roadmap? - Strategy.

5. Why are we here? Why have we pulled all these people and resources together? - Mission.

Have you ever noticed that world travelers seem to have an easier time affording their trips than people who are going on vacation? Think about it. You've been saving for months, maybe years, for that trip to Hawaii. The guy next door just got back from Singapore, and he's headed to Australia in a few weeks. Why is that?

To save money, you need to be flexible. If you have your heart set on a particular destination at a particular time, you've given away your flexibility, and you'll pay more for the privilege to get exactly what you want, when you want it. On the other hand, if you just want to travel somewhere new, you have the advantage. You can go wherever the low fares take you.

Just about everyone is familiar with discount fare sites like Expedia, Travelocity, and Priceline. What most people don't realize is that the six legacy carriers--United, U.S. Airways, American, Delta, Northwest, and Continental--offer a variety of special fares on a regular basis exclusively through their own Web sites. (To be accurate, Alaska Air is also a legacy carrier, but its specialized market works differently; we're only talking about the six listed above.)

One type of discount is the last-minute discount. The biggest cost of flying a plane is the fuel that it takes to get it off the ground and keep it there. Flights don't get cancelled because they're underbooked, but every empty seat is lost revenue for the airline. It's better to have a seat filled than to have one empty, so airlines cut fares on seats that would otherwise be empty to get people in them.

But there's a twist. If a flight is popular, then getting a ticket at the last minute costs more than usual. And the airlines don't know whether a flight will be popular or not until a few days before it's scheduled to leave. So, every week--usually on Tuesdays--airlines publish last-minute discount fares for the week.

Last-minute discounts are always based on origin and destination. To see where you might be able to go, just look up the airport or airports out which you may be able to fly. Be sure to read the terms. Last-minute fare specials are nonrefundable and generally require you to leave and return on specific days (though not at specific times). A typical domestic last-minute fare will require a Saturday departure with return on Sunday or Monday. International last-minute fares may run Thursday to Monday or Friday to Tuesday.

Airlines also offer promotional discounts on rates that they want to draw attention. If an airline just added an exciting new route or hub, a special fare offer is a good way to get the word out. Promotional fares also help airlines fill seats to destinations that are out of season. For instance, United almost always offers winter fare specials to Germany, but warm-weather destinations are discounted in the summer.

The restrictions on promotional fares vary but tend to be more flexible than last-minute fares. There's always a requirement to purchase by a certain date and travel within a certain period. Most promotional fares outside of the U.S. have a minimum stay required at the destination (ranging from a Saturday night for Europe to as much as a week for Asian destinations). And, of course, these are nonrefundable fares.

Finding special fares can be a bit time consuming. The specials are published on the airlines' own Web sites, which means you need to visit each one in turn to see all of the options. You can cut that back a bit by focusing on airlines that have major presence at your local airport, but then you might miss a really good deal.

A New Airline For Mexico...Again!

The percolating Mexican airline market will be getting another player before the year ends according a report in the Irish Examiner.

RyanMex will be taking flight thanks to a 49% investment by the Ryan Family, the backers of Ryanair, the huge Irish discount air carrier. IAMSA, Mexico's largest bus transportation company, will hold the controlling 51% share of the airline.

RyanMex will be joining a host of other Mexican carriers taking flight this year in the newly deregulated Mexican airline market including upstart Volaris Airlines.

New Airline For Nantucket

According to a report in the Boston Herald, sun lovers will soon have a new airline to help them get back and forth to Nantucket thanks to the financial backing of a pair of Cape Cod businessmen. Nantucket Shuttle is preparing to take to the skies this summer by offering passengers a cheaper alternative to the two existing carriers, Island Airlines and Cape Air/Nantucket Airlines.

With flights starting as low as .95 each way, the new airline will effectively undercut the discounted commuter book fares of its competitors. Currently, both existing operators charge each way per person, but a ten ticket commuter book drops that price to per trip.

The airline will operate one eight passenger Cessna 414A and five ten passenger Cessna 402C aircraft.

NWA Pilots Authorize Strike

92% of Northwest Airlines pilots have authorized their union to conduct a strike against the beleagured and bankrupt carrier.

With a showdown over wage concessions and work rules looming, the strike will not occur unless the airline imposes concessions on its pilots according to union officials.

NWA flight attendants are also threatening to strike; their voting period lasts through March 6th.

Air travel sector in India is quite impressive and it is increasing day by day. After the deregulation of aviation industry many domestic flight services emerged in last some years, thus providing passengers various options to choose from.

Currently in India, there are 6 full service airlines, out of which 5 are privately owned and 1 is operated by Government of India. In addition to these there are 5 low cost carriers that are privately owned by different business groups.

Top five domestic air service providers in my point of view are:

1. Air India: Air India is government owned airline service of India headquartered in Mumbai, the financial capital of India. Air India is best domestic service provider in India as well as 16 largest airline of Asia region. It connects almost every major city of India.

2. Jet Airways: Jet Airways India is the biggest airlines of India with largest fleet size. With its quality services it has captured around 23% share of India aviation market. Excellent in-flight services and other facilities have established it as premier player in its field. JetLite, previously known as Sahara airlines is also owned by Jet airways.

3. Kingfisher Airlines: Owned by UB group, Kingfisher airlines is another full service airlines with 15% share in Indian domestic market. Connecting 40 destinations in India Kingfisher has youngest fleet in India with an average age of 2 years.

4. Indigo Airlines: Indigo is owned and operated by Interglobe, and is one of the best low cost airlines services of India. They have captured 11% share of Indian domestic air services since its inception in 2006.

5. SpiceJet Airlines: SpiceJet started its operation in 2005 and now it covers 10% share of domestic air travel in India. Connecting most of the capital cities of India, SpiceJet if know for cheapest airfare available. So if you have a tight budget, consider SpiceJet.
