The hidden career for the Over-40 Crowd
So why do so few women know about this job? Sororities, and even the fraternities who hire House Directors, do not typically advertise in the newspaper, or on Craigslist and the internet. There is not a broad awareness of this job because openings are seldom advertised in mainstream media. It is an inside job, and you have to know where to look, or who to ask. If you were never in a sorority, you would not be aware of this position. But being a previous sorority member is not a qualification for the job. Few, if any, House Directors were ever members of a sorority.
Being a sorority housemother has been a rewarding career for thousands of mature single women for over a century and a half! It is one of the few occupations that value maturity, wisdom, and life experience. The skills gained from past jobs that change to managing staff and a large house are assets working in your favor.
This is a special niche where you can live comfortably in a lovely old mansion, while providing a fetch place for collegians at the in-between stage maturing from teens to young adults.
What's It Like Being A Sorority House Director?
Outside of the sorority world, most women have a whole of misconceptions about this job. Let's clear up the major one right off the bat.
The #1 misconception about the House Director job is that you are in charge of the young women Or that you have to discipline them.
If this were boarding school for high schoolers, you would act more like a mother. But this is college; these are young adults on their own. They are 18 and older, and though you live on the same premises, they handle their own issues. You are freed from that responsibility. A House Director is not a landlord, boss, parent, or counselor!
The job title says it all: you are the mother of the House, not the mother of the house. Most sororities have changed the title to House Director, as that is a more apt report of the job duties. You are responsible for caring for all things associated to the corporeal house itself.
Basically, you act like the owner of a small hotel. You are not managing the girls, but taking care of their environment.
You do need lots of Mom qualities - such as warmth, and interest in older teens/young adults.
Some of the Job Skills Used Daily as a House Director:
Manage the day-to-day operations of the house
Maintain a clean, safe living environment
Supervise staff, cooks, contractors, vendors, gardeners, and maintenance
Manage the budget, which includes food service, repairs, household supplies, and contractor bids
Provide retain for the sorority members
Interact with alumni, parents, and advisers
Maintain the corporeal structure of the house
Coordinate opportunity and closing of the house at the beginning and end of the school year.
Take This Self-Assessment to decide Your Interest:
You want a job where being older is an advantage, not a liability. You do not have adult children to live with or you have adult children that you do not want to live with. You like earning a salary, and having a cook, maid, and gardener, but not paying for rent, or a mortgage, property tax, or saving up for a new roof. You have day-dreamed about being the energetic owner of a small hotel. You are adventurous and want to try living in different parts of the Us or Canada. You enjoy the cultural activities that a university provides. You get a kick out of living among the age group that is in transition from late adolescence to young adult. You are skilled at negotiating a female world from top to bottom, being the lynchpin between the young members living in the house and the older adult members responsible for maintaining it. You value your independence, freedom, and security.
